SweetWater Brewing recently released their newest Catch n’ Release seasonal, Goin’ Coastal IPA with Pineapple. Tucker over at SweetWater World Domination Headquaraters in Atlanta was kind enough to send me some samples of Goin’ Coastal to review, so let’s get right to it.

Malts: 2 Row, Munich, Wheat, Premium English, Crystal Malts
Hops: Columbus, Cascade, Simcoe, Goldings, Centennial, Chinook
Dry hops: Cascade, Simcoe, Golding, Centennial
ABV: 6.1% IBU’s: 50

OK, on to the review.
SweetWater Goin’ Coastal IPA with Pineapple poured from a 12oz bottle into a regular old shaker pint glass.
Aroma (8/12) – I’m getting tropical and citrus aromas (shocking!) without much breadiness or malt undertones. The aroma isn’t strong, but it’s pleasant.
Appearance (2/3) – I’d call it a dark gold or light copperish. It’s not hazy or cloudy, but not perfectly clear, either.
Flavor (16/20) – Initially, I got citrus and tropical flavors that seemed to come more from the hops than any actual pineapple. But as it warmed, the pineapple became more apparent. It plays with the hoppy notes and accentuates them, rather than turning the beer into a fruit cocktail that overpowers the IPA aspects. There’s little to no maltiness here, even if the hops and pineapple aren’t in your face.
Mouthfeel (5/5) – This is where Goin’ Coastal really shines. It is light bodied and easy to drink, which is what a summer beer should be. There’s no lasting bitterness and no booziness. It makes you want to drink another one without leaving you with palate fatigue.
Overall Impression (8/10) – Goin’ Coastal should appeal to a wide audience. It has enough hop aroma and flavor to appeal to the IPA fans, but its easy drinking nature should make it a beer that even non-hopheads can enjoy. I appreciate the balance it has between hoppiness and drinkability. Although not exactly sessionable at 6.1%, it’s one that I can see myself enjoying by the pool all summer long.
So, total score for SweetWater’s Goin’ Coastal IPA with Pineapple is a 39/50, which makes it a solid, well done beer. Look for it starting this week on shelves here in south Louisiana. Let me know your thoughts once you’ve had a chance to try it.
