Zapp’s International Beerfest returns to the Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge on Saturday, March 21st. This annual event is my favorite beer festival in the state. The beautiful outdoor setting of the Rural Life Museum allows the patrons to spread out and enjoy the grounds while drinking some great brews. Hundreds of beers from dozens of brewers will be featured, but as is the case with many of these festivals, the homebrew area is the place to be.
There will be at least 4 homebrew clubs pouring beers, as well as the state’s premier homebrew shop, LA Homebrew. The clubs pouring will be Brasseurs a la Maison, Redstick Brewmasters, Bicycle Brew Club, and Mystic Krewe of Brew. I’ll be out there helping pour beers at the Brasseurs a la Maison setup, which if you’ve seen it before, you can’t miss. Our club has turned an old canoe into a giant wall of taps.
I brewed 2 beers for Zapp’s, and they are all kegged and ready to serve. The first is a double IPA called “Dank as F*ck”, and it was brewed with some of the dankest hop varieties available: Summit, Appollo, Comet and Mosaic. It definitely has a big hop profile, but finishes without a lot of bitterness. The second is “Pink Passion”, an American wheat ale brewed with passionfruit tea from Highland Coffees. The tea leaves were after the boil, imparting a distinct tea flavor as well as its pink color. If you’re on the beer app Untappd, you can find all of these with the hashtag #zapps2015 or under the brewery “Brasseurs a la Maison.”
Hopefully the weather holds and we have a nice day to enjoy some great beers with friends. Come try my beers and the dozens more homebrews and craft brews from around the area. Hope to see you there.
