Bayou Teche Joie a Tous

After much inquiry, the Christmas themed biere from Bayou Teche Brewing finally showed up here in Baton Rouge this week. Tonight I had an opportunity to give it a try.

This biere is a version of their Biere Joi, a dubbel brewed with Mello Joy coffee, aged in Jack Daniels whiskey barrels. It pours a ruby-amber with a small and quickly disappearing head. The smell is of coffee grounds and a touch of whiskey. The flavor has a touch of vanilla and caramel, but it’s the coffee that shines through. As it warms, the oak and ships key flavor really makes an appearance. Initially, I wasn’t so sure about this one, but the warmer it got, the more I appreciated it. It’s very different from any other beer with coffee, but they did a good job with it. I’d have to say it’s probably my favorite beer from Bayou Teche to date.

It’s definitely a beer worth trying if you can find it this holiday season.
