Today I leave for Laurel, Mississippi and the Mississippi 50 trail run in the DeSoto National Forest. I ran this as my first 50K last year, and this year I’m signed up for the 50 mile race. The weather was awful last year, as we ran through mud, huge puddles, and raging streams. My hopes for better weather this year seem to be dashed. It looks like a monsoon will hit hours before the start. At least I have experience running in those conditions.
My ankle tendonitis and ITB issues will determine how far I go. If I feel good, I’ll attempt the 50 miles. If not, I have no problem settling for “just” the 50K. I really want to do the 50 miles, but I also have to be smart so as not to set myself back for upcoming races.
I’m really looking forward to running in the woods with good friends, both old and new. And rest assured there will be a good beer waiting for me at the finish!
