IPA Day Roundup

5 Aug

Thursday August 2nd marked the second annual IPA Day, and of course I had to celebrate. Fellow beer blogger, Eric Ducote of BR Beer Scene hosted a bottle share/tasting with roughly a dozen fellow IPA fanatics in attendance.

In all, I tasted 23 different IPA’s, of which 12 I had never tried. Below is the full list.

Bell’s Two Hearted Ale
Laughing Dog Alpha Dog Imperial IPA
Diamond Bear Two Term Double IPA
New Belgium Belgo IPA
Cocoa Beach IPA
Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
Stone Ruination 10th Anniversary IPA
21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA
8 Wired Fresh Hop IPA
Lagunitas Hop Stoopid IPA
Boulevard Double Wide IPA
Firestone Walker Double Jack IPA
Green Flash Imperial IPA
Austin Beerworks Fire Eagle IPA
Dogfish Head Burton Baton IPA
Three Floyd’s Dreadnaught IPA
Heretic Evil Twin
Schlafly American IPA
Three Floyd’s Black Heart
Tool/Mikkeller OV-RAL IPA
Three Floyd’s Apocolypse Cow IPA
Grayton Beach IPA
The Alchemist Heady Topper

If forced to pick a top 3, it would be hard to go with anything but the Stone Ruination 10th Anniversary, Firestone Walker Double Jack and Heady Topper.

But there were some other standouts, good and bad. First with the bad.

8 Wired Fresh Hop was by far my least favorite of the night. It smelled like a freshly opened can of spinach. Not fresh spinach. Canned spinach. The taste didn’t get any better either. This one was really a disappointment.

The Weyerbacher Double Simcoe was disappointing, but it seemed like an old bottle. I’ve had it before and really liked it, so I guess this one was sitting on the shelf too long.

On the good side, the Schlafly IPA brought by Eric’s brother, Jay, of Bite and Booze, was really tasty. If that was available here, I could see it making the regular rotation. Then again, I don’t really have much of a regular rotation…

Special thanks to Eric for sharing the 3 bottles of Three Floyd’s he brought home from the Beer Bloggers Conference a few weeks before. All 3 were fantastic, and I hope to get a chance to try them all again.

All in all, IPA Day was a big success. Thanks to Eric for hosting, Dan for bringing an entire growler of Stone Ruination 10th from Avenue Pub, and all the other participants who shared their beer. It was a full assault of hops and made for a great evening.

Cheers!
